Supported Child Development Program

The Richmond Supported Child Development Program (SCDP) is a community-based program designed to support families and children with extra support needs to access inclusive child care that meets family needs. The heart of SCDP is the philosophy of inclusion. We believe that children and youth of diverse abilities have a right to participate in a full range of child care opportunities with their peers. SCDP Consultants are professionals that have been educated and trained to support the philosophy of inclusion.

SCDP works in partnership with parents and professionals to support children with developmental disabilities or delays to successfully participate in community childcare settings.

This includes:

  • Individual planning to promote each child’s development;
  • Training and information for families and childcare providers to foster the child’s development;
  • Referrals to other services such as therapists or specialists;
  • Where necessary, additional staffing to ensure that children may participate fully with their peers within a childcare program.

Who is Eligible for SCDP?

  • Children from birth to their 19th birthday;
  • A child with a developmental delay or disability (cognitive, communication, social/emotional/behavioural or physical);
  • A child that requires consultation and/or support to participate in a childcare setting.

Children under 5 years may receive support in a preschool program regardless of whether their parents are working or going to school. For parents who are working or attending school, support in daycare or out-of-school child care program is offered.

How do I get involved?

Submit an online referral and provide supporting documentation related to your child’s delay or disability. Once submitted, someone from Aspire Richmond will contact you.

Is there a cost?

SCDP is operated with funding from the Ministry of Child and Family Development (MCFD). There is no cost for SCDP services as our program is voluntary. Families are responsible for any space fees that are required by the child care program. Families are able to apply for Child Care Benefit through MCFD to cover the space fee costs.

Benefits for your child:

The child care program that your child attends with be provided child specific information and resources. SCDP will provide training to child care providers to encourage inclusion. Your child will have the opportunity to learn new skills, make friends and have new experiences.

Benefits for family:

SCDP assists families in finding options and available spaces in licensed daycare, preschool and out-of-school care programs as well as supporting the family by providing information on community resources transitions and child care subsidy.
